Head coach: Carl Weber (11th season).
Last year: Wheeler finished 3-12-1 overall and 2-5 in the league.
Returning to varsity:
Seniors: Nolan Arruda, Ryan Hare, Samson Hauptmann, Seth Kosztala, Zach Munzer, Bryce Reck, Alex Rustici.
Sophomores: Colby Sadowski, Sam Taylor.
New to varsity:
Freshman: Michael Caster.
Outlook: Wheeler has seven seniors on the team, and the Lions are hoping for a solid season.
Arruda who was on the team as sophomore but missed last season due to an injury is back. Arruda and Alex Rustici will likely play the top two spots in the lineup. The order has not been determined.
“Alec and Nolan have been playing pretty well this season,” coach Weber said. “They are really fighting for the top spots in the lineup. I have a lineup for our first match on Tuesday, but the remaining spots are still pretty open.”
Weber said it’s difficult to gauge how much the Lions have improved from last year.
“They all are hitting the ball a little bit further,” Weber said. “Since they are so close in ability, the competition has been great for practice.”
And once again the weather this spring has made preparing for the season a challenge.
“The weather hasn’t been cooperative the last two weeks, so I really have not had a chance to see if they have improved,” Weber said. “And it’s been tough since we’ve been moving into a new school.”
Weber said it’s hard to predict which teams will be good in the league, but he said Griswold and Tourtellotte have quality players returning.
Coach’s take: “With this team, we are hoping to be in and around 200. That’s our goal each round. I never have any expectations for wins and losses. I just kind of pick the courses that fit my kids the best.”
