Brittany DeGrooth of Westerly was named the MVP of the Rhode Island College women’s soccer team. DeGrooth, the Little East offensive player of the year and first-team All-Little East selection, played in 18 games, starting all of them. She had 17 goals and eight assists for 42 points. DeGrooth scored four times in RIC’s 5-1 win at Fitchburg State on Oct. 24 to become the program’s all-time leader with 41 career goals. It brought her season total to 17, which equaled the RIC record for goals in a season. Three of her goals were game-winners for the Anchorwomen. Her 42 points this season tied for the second-highest single-season total in program history.
Maddie McLaughlin of Westerly was named to the All-Tournament team at the Emmanuel College Tip Off Classic basketball tournament on Sunday in Boston. McLaughlin, a senior guard for Emmanuel, finished with 17 assists in the title game, a 102-89 win against Westfield State. McLaughlin is averaging 10.3 points and 9.3 assists per game this season. Emmanuel is 3-0.
Former Chariho High runner Gregg Hammett finished first in the Li’l Rhody Runaround on Sunday at Burlingame State Park in Charlestown. Hammett, who lives in Chesterfield, N.H., completed the 8-mile course in 48:14. Ashley Jensen of Boston was the first female runner across the line, placing 16th in 57:01. The next five local male runners were Justin Bentley, Ashaway (third, 49:17), Jonathan Hammett, Charlestown (fifth, 49:27), Tommy Bousquet, Westerly (sixth, 50:25), Jeff Walker (seventh, 51:58) and Sam Lutzel, Westerly (eighth, 53:45). The first five local female finishers were Alana Olendorf, Mystic (24th, 59:30), Elise Huysman (37th, 1:04.24), Heather Alge, Hopkinton (74th, 1:12:21), Carol Ann Gray, Pawcatuck (86th, 1:14:46) and Stacey Leitz, Westerly (89th, 1:15:03). The race had 151 finishers.
