PAWTUCKET — The Rhody Wave Runners 12U softball team opened the double-elimination portion of the Class C state tournament with an 8-5 loss to the Coventry Crush on Thursday night.

The Wave runners trailed 3-0 before tying the game in the second inning.

Ella Keegan started things with a line-drive single, and Sara Arnold followed with a base hit. Back-to-back bunt singles by Lyla Auth and Jeanette Cronin cut the lead to 3-2, and an RBI single by Bella Austin made it 3-all.

The Wave Runners took the lead in the fourth on another hit from Keegan, Auth's sacrifice bunt and a passed ball. But the Crush retook the lead in their half of the fourth and never looked back.

Keegan finished 3 for 3 with two runs scored, and Austin contributed two hits and an RBI. Ava D’Ortona pitched three innings of relief and struck out two.
