WEST WARWICK — Ella Keegan and the Rhody Wave Runners travel softball team stayed alive in the double-elimination 12U state tournament with a 10-6 victory over Exeter-West Greenwich on Friday night.
Keegan, Rhody's catcher, went 2 for 4 with four RBIs and had strong game behind the plate as well as in the base paths — she called the pitches on her own for the first time, stole four bases and scored three runs.
“Ella has been part of this travel organization for five years now, and her bat always heats up this time of year," Wave Runners coach Gerry Auth said in an email. "She’s as hot as I’ve ever seen her right now. Everything she hits is a hard line drive.”
Rhody used three pitchers against EWG. Lyla Auth started, Ava D’Ortona worked the middle innings and Tori Gabriele pitched a scoreless inning in relief. D'Ortona reentered to get the final two outs.
Rhody finished with nine hits. In addition to Keegan, Gabriele and Auth had two hits each. Gabriele added three RBIs and a run scored.
