SMITHFIELD — Tori Gabriele allowed one unearned run from the pitching circle and had two hits at the plate to lead Westerly's 12U travel softball team, the Rhody Wave Runners, to an 11-1 win over the East Bay Rage in the state tournament Wednesday night.

The game completed pool play for the Wave Runners. It was stopped after five innings by the mercy rule.

Gabriele struck out nine and walked one in five innings of work. Offensively, she had an RBI and a run scored in addition to her two hits.

“She mixed up her pitches tonight and attacked the strike zone," coach Gerry Auth said in an email. "It was by far her most dominating performance this year. She’s one of the leaders of this team, and she played like it tonight.”

The Wave Runners led 6-0 after two innings. They finished with 10 hits and eight stolen bases.

Ava D'Ortona had two hits, two stolen bases and two runs scored. Lyla Auth added two hits and two RBIs.

The double-elimination portion of the tournament was scheduled to begin Thursday night.
