WOOD RIVER JCT. — Westerly High lost a pair of nonleague wrestling matches Saturday, including one to Chariho High for the Challenge Cup.

Chariho beat Westerly, 30-12, with seven bouts uncontested and considered no matches.

Chariho has won the Challenge Cup, which is presented to the winning team, seven straight times and leads the series with Westerly, 19-7.

Westerly's last win was in 2012. The series started in 1993.

Westerly's Brian Garcia pinned Chariho's Riley Thayer in 3:13 at 126 pounds. Westerly's Alex Brophy received a forfeit at 132.

Chariho's Kyle Merritt won his bout at 145 pounds, pinning Westerly's Adam Gomez in 51 seconds.

Chariho's Luke Mead pinned Xavier Webster in 50 seconds at 170 pounds. Chariho's Wade Husing (106), Christian Fortune (113) and Mitchell Daniels (120) won by forfeit.

Westerly lost to Lincoln, 42-12.

Garcia won by sudden victory with a pin in 8:28. Gomez prevailed with a pin at 145 in 1:29.

Westerly (2-16) next hosts West Warwick and Narragansett on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
