NORTH STONINGTON — Wheeler High's young softball team had four players earn All-ECC Division IV honors, including one first-team selection.
Sophomore Marissa Bergel was named to the first team after hitting .288 with 17 hits and eight RBIs.
"She was a great contact hitter, our No. 2 hitter," Wheeler coach Joe Cawley said. "She put the ball in play a lot and could lay down a bunt. She was solid at second base and a very, very good all-around player."
Sophomores Molly Butremovic and Julie Rudd and freshman Maddie Perkins received honorable mention recognition.
Butremovic hit. 394 with three doubles. She was also a "tremendous" first baseman, Cawley said.
Rudd played shortstop and was second on the team in doubles with five.
Perkins played catcher and led the team in hitting (.413) and hits (19). Cawley said she will be the best catcher in the league by her junior year.
Junior Sam Caster was the team's ECC sportsmanship award winner. Senior Savannah Galluci was the scholar-athlete winner.
Wheeler finished the season 6-11, one win from qualifying for the Class S state tournament. The team returns seven starters next season, including its pitcher, Addie Hauptmann, and catcher, Perkins.
