WEST WARWICK — Ava D’Ortona allowed just one unearned run as the Westerly 12U Wave Runners beat Cranston Fusion, 9-1, in the Weekend Warrior softball tournament Friday night.

D'Ortona faced 22 batters pitching all six innings. She walked one and allowed just one ball to the outfield. The win avenged an earlier loss to the Fusion this summer.

Jett Cronin, Maya Henderson and Tori Gabriele made strong defensive plays behind her.

The Wave Runners finished with 12 hits and 14 stolen bases.

Gabriele drove in four runs, stole four bases, scored four times and finished with two hits. Lyla Auth had two hits and drove in a pair. Abby Emery and Natalie Newhouse contributed two hits each. Henderson scored twice.

“Ava was outstanding for us tonight. She worked fast, threw strikes and relied on our defense to make the plays behind her," coach Gerry Auth said in an email. "Offensively, we kept the pressure on every inning and got a nice contribution from the bottom third of our lineup (5 hits) which helped extend innings and add baserunners for our big hitters at the top.”

The Wave Runners will play again on Saturday at Riverpoint Park at 9:45 a.m. in West Warwick against the Rhode Island Rockets.
