WEST WARWICK — Ava D'Ortona drove in three runs as the Rhody Wave Runners defeated the Rhode Island Rockets, 8-6, in the Weekend Warrior tournament Saturday.

The 12U Runners finished pool play 2-0 and will be the No. 3 seed. Rhody faces the Fury from Pawtucket on Sunday at 8 a.m. Due to the extreme heat, games will be shortened to 60 minutes or five innings on Sunday.

Abby Emery doubled in a run. Tori Gabriele and Sara Arnold had RBI singles.

Tori Gabriele started for the Wave Runners and pitched into the 3rd inning, Lyla Auth and Ava D’Ortona finished off the 1-⅓ innings.

"It was a hot day and our girls didn't let that bother them. Ella Keegan set the tone playing outstanding defense behind the plate. It's not easy to go out there with all that gear on this time of year, but she never let's it bother her. I'm proud of her effort," coach Gerry Auth said in an email. "Our energy led to some great plays defensively, especially from second baseman Jett Cronin, who made a couple outstanding running catches to save some runs."
