WESTERLY — Ava D'Ortona pitched five solid innings of relief and the 12U Rhody Wave Runners, Westerly's travel softball team, opened the Bash on the Beach tournament with a 5-4 victory over the Guilderland (N.Y.) Titans on Friday at Cimalore Field.
D'Ortona relieved starter Lyla Auth in the first inning and held the Titans to two runs in five innings. Auth re-entered in the sixth and held the Titans scoreless to preserve the win.
Auth, Tori Gabriele and Maya Henderson each had two hits to lead the Wave Runner offense. Abby Emery added an RBI double, and Henderson also scored twice.
“Ava did a great job keeping the Titans off balance and the Wave Runners in the game," Wave Runners coach Gerry Auth said in an email. "She threw strikes and let the defense make the plays behind her. This was our best defensive effort all season. Maya Henderson and Sara Arnold made some big plays defensively to get us out of some tough situations.”
The Bash on the Beach features 45 teams from New England and New York in four age divisions: 10U, 12U, 14U and 16U. There are games scheduled at Cimalore Field, the Trombino Sports Complex, Pawcatuck Little League and Dow Field in Hope Valley.
The Wave Runners were scheduled to play two tournament games on Saturday at Cimalore.
