GRISWOLD — NFA pitcher Bailey Comeau struck out 16 Stonington High batters and limited the Bears to two hits as the Wildcats prevailed, 4-2, in the semifinals of the ECC softball tournament Wednesday.

Despite Comeau's performance, No. 5 Stonington only trailed 2-1 after five innnings.

Maggie Constantine singled in Miranda Arruda in the fourth inning. In the sixth, Phoebe Werling scored on a passed ball.

Werling also had a big defensive game in left field. She doubled a runner off first base in the third inning and threw out another runner at home.

"After that they stopped running," Stonington coach Ann-Marie Houle said. "Phoebe had an amazing game. We knew we had to play perfect defense to hang with NFA. We had one error, but it didn't hurt us. She set the tone."

Cayla Beverly pitched all six innings and took the loss.

No. 1 NFA (16-4) will play Griswold for the title Thursday at 7 p.m.

Stonington (11-11) will likely be on the road for the first game of the Class M tournament next week. Pairings will be released later the week.
