Head coach: Allison Reyes (3rd season of 3rd stint, 9th overall).
Last year: The Lions finished 2-9. They were not part of the ECC and played an independent schedule. This year they’ve partnered with Grasso Tech to form a co-op team.
Returning to varsity:
Seniors: Gracie Anderson (MF), Daniela Roy (MF), Sarah Spracklin (D). Juniors: Savannah Johnson (A), Moira Mason (A), Lauren Rockwell (D). Sophomores: Amarie Bransford (D), Jess Johnson (A, D).
New to varsity:
Senior: Kelly Duarte (Grasso Tech). Junior: Amada Regine (MF-D). Sophomore: Miranda Pabst (D). Freshmen: Leigha Debois, Ellen Kappes, Bailey McGowan, Katelyn Melinoski, Samantha Morrissey (G, Grasso Tech), Leah Pion, Hanna Ritchie, Ute Zeeman.
Outlook: The co-op team plays a full ECC schedule after last year’s absence, and are in Division III with Griswold, Montville and New London.
Reyes said she was encouraged by the turnout of 19 for the sport, including eight athletic freshmen who are enjoying the game. Unfortunately, while many of the newcomers have played other sports, virtually all are new to lacrosse.
“It’s definitely challenging to figure out the game, the rules, but once they get comfortable out there they’ll make an impact for us,” Reyes said.
Roy, Anderson and Spracklin, the three seniors, will be the focal points for the Lions. Roy scored 12 goals last season; Anderson had 10.
“Daniela and Gracie play the midfield, and they’re our leaders on and off the field,” Reyes said. “Sarah will lead the defense.”
Montville and Griswold are the teams to beat in D-III, Reyes said. “We’re looking to be competitive in there, but it’s tough because many of these girls have never played. ... It’s a steep learning curve, but hopefully we do it quickly.”
Coach’s take: “We’d like to get to .500, 6-6, but we’re really just focusing on improving end to end, and being competitive in every game.”
