Head coach: Sue Haik (fourth season). Assistant coaches: Erinn Beal, Rana Hamelin.

Last year: Westerly finished 14-10 overall, 13-5 in Division II. The Bulldogs lost in the preliminary round of the D-II tournament and did not qualify for the state tournament.

Returning to varsity:

Seniors: Megan Albamonti (F), Carley Bowen (G), Mia Capparelli (G), Lauren Dobson (G), Emily Haik (F), Isis Hamelin (G), Jaime Murray (G), Jenna Murray (G). Junior: Anna Cozzolino (F). Sophomores: Alexa Beal (F), Rachel Dobson (G), Jackie Fusaro (G), Mackenzie Fusaro (G).

New to varsity: None.

Outlook: Westerly hopes to make a run at the Division II title, and while that quest starts with Albamonti, it certainly doesn’t end there.

Despite being the focus of most team’s defenses, Albamonti averaged 15.9 points and 14 rebounds per game as an inside player last season. She has a nice touch and is a difficult challenge for every league team. She was an honorable-mention All-State selection last season.

But the Bulldogs will need others to contribute.

“We’ve really been working on getting more scoring from all over the court,” coach Haik said. “We want to move the ball around and take some pressure off Megan. The girls put in a lot of time over the summer, and we should be much more balanced this year.”

Hamelin averaged 8.9 points and 3.7 assists last year at guard. Emily Haik returns after missing her junior year with a knee injury. Her toughness at both ends of the floor should give the team a boost. Dobson returns at a guard spot.

Haik expects to push the ball more this season, but still be in control.

Coach’s take: “Our team goal is to be the Division II champion. We have set a high goal this year. The senior girls have shown great leadership, and I don’t think it is out of reach to put that goal on them.”
