Nick Turo

Nick Turo

Head coach: Dave Federico (second season). Assistant coaches: Frank Abate, Eric Collins.

Last year: Westerly finished 7-2 in the Southern Division, losing to Chariho and league champion North Kingstown. Westerly qualified for both the state and New England meets.

Returning to varsity:

Seniors: Colby Makin, Sebastian Reisch, Aaron Tallardy, John Turo, Nick Turo. Juniors: Tyler Faubert, Tanner Kelly, Owen McLaughlin. Sophomores: Nick Cozzolino, Joe Murdock, Elias Orphanides, Brandon Tallardy,

New to varsity:

Juniors: Evan Brunelle, Adrian Medina. Sophomores: Jiahao Guo, Jacob Serra. Freshmen: Aidan Cody, Oscar McLaughlin, Matt Morrone, Alex White.

Outlook: Westerly looks to qualify for New Englands for the second straight year.

The Bulldogs return three runners who scored at the New England meet last season in Nick Turo, Reisch and Kelly. Makin scored at the state meet.

Turo, Reisch, Aaron Tallardy and Kelly look like the top four scorers at this point, but they are all capable of being the team’s first runner across the line.

Serra, Makin and John Turo will be vying for the fifth scoring spot.

The Bulldogs would like to break the lock North Kingstown and Chariho have had on the top two spots in the league most seasons. Westerly faces those two in the final league meet of the season on Sept. 30.

“That is really the meet right there,” Federico said. “At least we will have some time to get ready.”

Coach’s take: “We are looking to be more competitive in the Southern Division. We want to do well in the our class meet, be in the top six at the state meet and qualify for New Englands again.”
