Head coach: Jenna Tucchio (16th season). Assistant coach: Mark Hultgren (volunteer).
Last year: Stonington finished 17-2-2, losing in the Class S semifinals in overtime to eventual state champion Immaculate. Stonington won the ECC regular-season title and shared the tournament crown with East Lyme.
Returning to varsity:
Seniors: Sarah Flakus (D, captain), Gracie Todisco (D), Kaira Wiltshire (M, captain). Juniors: Ellie Korinek (A), Olivia Monte (A), Teagan O’Brien (M). Sophomores: Sophia Fernholz (D), Dillon Griscom (M), Sandy McGugan (M).
New to varsity:
Seniors: Claire Evans (G), Bella McCarthy (D). Sophomores: Eileen Ackley (D), Anne Drago (D), Samantha Harris (M), Hannah Nulick (A).
Outlook: Stonington is seeking its third straight appearance in the Class S semifinals, but the team would like to go one step further this year.
The Bears have two big holes to fill with the graduation of All-State players Miranda Arruda and Colette Dreher.
Korinek is the top returning goal scorer with 14 last season. She will be joined up front by Monte and Nulick.
Wiltshire and O’Brien are returning starters to the midfield, where they will be joined by McGugan and Griscom. Flakus and Fernholz will start in the back. The final position on the back line is still up for grabs. Evans will play keeper.
“I think on the forward line and through the midfield we are good. We have good speed and ball handling in attack, and we have some experienced players that can transition the ball,” Tucchio said. “We graduated the entire defense so we have a blank slate there.”
Coach’s take: “We always set the goal to win the ECC. We are young and developing, but we set pride in that goal. The team wants to get out of the [state] semifinals. We are a long way from getting to the semifinals, but I let them set the goals. I will just jump on their back and go along for the ride.”
