Last year: Stonington finished 10-12, 7-3 ECC Division II. The Bears qualified for the Division IV tournament, but lost their opener.
Returning to varsity:
Seniors: R.J. Parrilla (G), Jacob Geary (C), Marquis Jackson (G), David DeFanti (G). Juniors: Zach Scott (G), Ayden Morrison (C), Aaiden Borsher (G), Peter Fernholz (G). Liam Martley (G). Sophomore: Anthony Fry (G).
New to varsity:
Senior: Cooper Wall (G). Junior: Tyler Fidrych (G).
Outlook: Stonington returns three quality scorers in Scott, Jackson and Parrilla.
Scott averaged 16.2 a game last season earning first team All-ECC Division II honors. Scott can shoot the 3-pointer, but coach Luzzi says there will be more this year.
“Zach will be an outstanding shooter again, but he added the ability to get to the rim,” Luzzi said.
Parrilla, an All-New England soccer player in the fall, can run the floor and handle the ball at the point. He averaged 9.1 points. Jackson can shoot the 3-pointer and get to the basket. He is a top-notch rebounder averaging 8.0 per game last season. He was the second-leading scorer on the team at 10.6 per game.
Geary and Morrison, both 6-foot-5, provide rebounding strength. Fry, a projected starter, may not be able to play until late in the season after breaking a bone in his leg in the summer league.
“If we can play defense I think we can have a good year,” Luzzi said.
Coach’s take: “If we can put everything together we are a contender in our division and will be in the running for our ECC tournament title. I think we could make a run in the state tournament.”
