Head coach: Brittney Godbout (ninth season). Assistant coaches: Jess Hannegan, Scotty McGuire, Riss Nardelli (volunteer).
Last year: Chariho finished 8-6-5 overall, losing in the opening round of the Division II tournament on penalty kicks to Moses Brown.
Returning to varsity:
Seniors: Carlie Bentley (G), Alison Klein (G), Tia Sardelli (D, captain), Emily Seekell (M), Rebekah Sullivan (M, captain). Juniors: Meagan Butler (D), Ava DiBiasio (F), Daria DiBiasio (D), Emily Feisthamel (M), Emma Hughes (D), Elizabeth Johnson (M), Spencer Shiels (F). Sophomores: Grace Abbott (D), Briana Denecour (A), Anabelle Pezzullo (M), Julia Potts (D), Eva Simmons (M).
New to varsity:
Freshman: Tessa Azzinaro (F).
Outlook: Chariho returns two first-team Division II selections in Sardelli and Daria DiBiasio.
They will occupy the center-back spots. Klein, who led the team in goals with 10 last season, will play goalie.
“She’s aggressive, loud and very athletic,” Godbout said. “She needs to learn to trust her first instinct.”
Hughes and Butler will play outside in the back. Simmons, Pezzullo, Sullivan and Feisthamel are in the midfield. Shiels will start at forward. She scored seven goals last year despite being injured for a good part of the season. Denecour and Azzinaro will also get time up front.
Godbout is hopeful the Chargers can stay healthy after a seemingly endless run of injuries last season.
“We are very young, but very athletic and we have a lot of depth this year, which will give us some flexibility to make changes and sub a lot more,” Godbout said. “The last two years have been pretty difficult for us.”
Godbout said the Chargers are undersized but will have to move the ball quickly to compensate for that.
Coach’s take: “Our main goal is to be competitive, have fun and get that drive and determination back. We’ve had an amazing preseason.”
