Co-head coaches: Jackie Haberland (third season), Scott Fortune (first season),
Last year: Chariho turned in one of its best seasons in a number of years, finishing 6-3 in the tough Southern Division. The Chargers qualified for the state meet as a team and three runners went to New Englands.
Returning to varsity:
Seniors: Anna Golas, Emily Stevens. Juniors: Cordelia Calberson, Abby Cole, Paige Grissom, Sophomores: Caitlynn Allenson, Julia Fortune, Anna LaCroix.
New to varsity:
Freshmen: Maria Mykhaylyshyn, Jillian Tierney.
Outlook: Chariho is looking to build on a breakout season last year, but there is little margin for error.
Chariho can be competitive with most of the teams in the Southern Division, but doesn’t have a lot of depth, according to Haberland.
“If everyone does their best we will be where we need to be,” she said. “But we are not like South Kingstown where we have 10 runners that are running nearly the same time.”
Cole emerged as the top runner on the team last season and seemed to improve each week. She finished 10th at the state meet to earn second-team All-State honors. She has the potential to do even better this season and could be among the best runners in the state.
“Abby is a very, very strong runner. She has a lot of confidence and she wants to do well,” Haberland said. “I just want her to take it one week at a time, enjoy the season and see what she can do.”
LaCroix and Fortune figure to be the next two runners on the squad. LaCroix was 25th at the state meet last season and second at the freshman state meet. Fortune was 42nd at the freshman state meet.
Allenson and Grissom will likely round out the top five scoring positions, but others could push them.
Coach’s take: “We want to make it to states again as a team. The team would like to make it to the New Englands.”
