Head coach: Bill Haberek (29th season). Assistant coaches: Mike Drummond (volunteer), Lynn Haberek (volunteer).
Last year: Chariho finished second in the Southern Division behind North Kingstown with an 8-1 record. The Chargers finished fifth at the state meet and qualified for New Englands.
Returning to varsity:
Seniors: Luke Gillett, Simon Manlove (captain), Kyle Merritt (captain), Connor Montague (captain), Dan Nimiroski (captain), Matt Power, Josh Smithey, Sam Steere (captain). Juniors: Kyle Ackroyd, Sullivan Cummins, C.J. Elwell, James Penhallow, Finn Weeden. Sophomores: Joe Golas, Mike Sheehan, Riley Thayer.
New to varsity:
Senior: Reilly Jarrett. Junior: John Tripodi. Sophomore: Miller Marcille. Freshman: Matt Nicolella.
Outlook: Chariho should once again be in the running for the division title.
“I think it’s going to be a tight group with guys pushing one another,” Haberek said. “I think that is what makes a good cross country team — guys always pushing each other.”
Penhallow was second-team Class B last season, and Elwell was third team. They will be among the top runners on the team. Golas, a third-team Southern Division selection last season, will also figure in the mix.
Haberek said Cummins, Weeden, Nimiroski and Manlove have all shown significant improvement.
Steere and Smithey also have the potential to be scorers.
North Kingstown and Westerly are also considered contenders for the league title with the Chargers. The three teams meet in the final league meet of the season at Chariho.
“That last dual meet could decide things,” Haberek said.
Coach’s take: “We want to be in contention in the division and qualify for the state meet. And we want to get one of those top six spots at the state meet for New Englands."
