GROTON — The Sanford Mainers scored five runs in the eighth inning Wednesday and defeated Mystic, 9-6, at Fitch High to hand the slumping Schooners their third straight loss.

Shane Marshall (Binghamton) hit a two-run single to highlight the eighth inning for Sanford (14-24, sixth place Northern Division). Marshall finished 3 for 5 with six RBIs.

Ben Maycock (UConn) hit a two-run home run and Will Lucas (UConn) had a three-run shot, both in the fifth, for Mystic, which led 6-4 when the inning ended.

Maycock and Isaiah Byars (Alabama) each finished with two hits.

Billy Phillips (0-1) was tagged with the loss. Phillips (Maryland) allowed three runs on two hits and two walks in ⅔ of an inning.

The Schooners (18-17-1) are just 2-7-1 over their last 10 games and sit in third place in the Southern Division, 4½ games behind the Martha's Vineyard Sharks (23-13).
