SOUTH KINGSTOWN — Ocean State scored five runs in the first inning and beat the Mystic Schooners, 7-6, in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game Tuesday.

Mystic (16-9) scored four runs in the eighth on a grand slam by David Beam (East Tennessee State) to make it interesting, but could get no closer.

Beam added a solo homer in the first inning and finished 4 for 5 with five RBIs. He also doubled.

Starter Luke Hansen (Sacred Heart) pitched the first four innings and took the loss. He struck out three and allowed seven hits.

Ocean State moved to 8-17.

Mystic and the Martha's Vineyard Sharks are tied for first place in the NECBL's Southern Division with 16-9 records.
