GROTON — The Mystic Schooners squandered a late four-run lead and lost to the Danbury Westerners, 8-7, in a New England Collegiate Baseball game, the first of a doubleheader, Monday afternoon at Fitch High.

The Schooners led 7-3 heading into the sixth, powered by Central Connecticut State's TT Bowens, who homered, doubled and drove in five runs.

But the Westerners scored three times in the sixth and twice in the seventh to pull ahead to stay.

Steve Barmakian (George Washington) finished with two hits and two runs scored for Mystic (18-16, third place Southern Division). Nolan Kessinger (UMass Amherst) and Jerome Huntzinger (Seton Hall) also had two hits apiece. Huntzinger doubled.

Peter Myers (Hartford), who entered in the fourth, was roughed up for five runs on six hits and one walk in three innings. Nick Robino (Wagner) pitched the seventh and took the loss, allowing two runs on four hits.

Danbury (16-18, fourth place Southern Division) finished with five extra-base hits (three home runs, two doubles).

The second game of the twinbill was stopped by rain.

Bowens, a Montville High graduate, leads the league in RBIs (40) and is second in home runs (13).
