SCITUATE — Westerly Middle fell to Scituate, 28-21, on Thursday in the first round of the middle school girls state basketball tournament.

Scituate used a compact zone defense to thwart Westerly's inside game, coach Charlie Toscano said, and Westerly was unable to capitalize from the perimeter, shooting 1 for 18 from 3-point range.

Scituate led 16-14 at halftime.

Rachel Federico had 12 points, five rebounds and four blocked shots for Westerly. Alex Stoehr added five points and five steals, and Ava Tenuta had five rebounds, three blocks and three steals.

Westerly finished the season 6-7 overall.
