Mike Marsella of Hope Valley finished fifth in the mile at the United States Track and Field indoor nationals on Feb. 23 at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Facility in Staten Island, N.Y. Marsella posted a time of 4:02.03. He runs for the Boston Athletic Association.


Tommy Wrzesien of Hope Valley, a freshman at Johnson & Wales University, has qualified for the Division III national wrestling championships in Roanoke, Va., on March 8-9. Wrzesien, a two-time state champion at Chariho High, earned the berth with a third-place finish in the 285-pound class at the Northeast Regional tournament on Feb. 23 in Providence. Johnson and Wales, which is ranked No. 3 nationally in D-III, won the tournament and will send nine wrestlers to the nationals. Wreziesen has posted a team-high 39 wins and also tops the team with 22 pins. Wrzesien has been nominated for NEWA rookie of the year twice. He won the heavyweight division in the Wildcat Open at Johnson and Wales on Jan. 7.

Alexi Fauzey of Charlestown was the Little East Conference men's lacrosse defensive player of the week for his performance in a 19-8 win over Emmanuel College. The UMass-Dartmouth freshman midfielder collected six ground balls and caused three turnovers. He also scored a goal.
