MANSFIELD CENTER, Conn. — The Groton/Mystic Little League softball All-Stars scored twice in the top of the fifth inning to break a tie then scored four more times in the sixth en route to an 8-2 win over Monroe on Wednesday in an elimination game of the state tournament for 8- to 10-year-olds.

Jaedyn Steffens led the offense with three hits and three runs scored, while Jillian Fugere had four RBIs. Leilani McCoy, Mallory Bogle and Isabel Southers each added two hits.

Fugere pitched a complete game, allowing two runs on six hits. She struck out nine and walked none.

The game was knotted at 2 before Groton/Mystic struck for its two runs in the fifth.

With the win, Groton/Mystic advanced to the state finals and will play Wallingford on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. Groton/Mystic will have to defeat Wallingford twice to win the state title. The second game, if necessary, will be played on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
