WESTERLY — Westerly High opened the Division II girls volleyball season with a 3-2 loss to Lincoln in a match at Federico Gym on Tuesday night.

Westerly lost by set scores of 25-12, 25-27, 25-15, 22-25 and 17-15.

Westerly trailed in the third set, 14-10, but came back to tie the match at 14 before eventually losing.

“We came back to tie it and they scored the final two points off two mistakes by us. Overall, we played much better than we did in the Injury Fund match,” Westerly coach Erinn Beal said. “We had a lot of serving errors and gave away points on our own errors — things we can fix easily.”

Westerly’s Daisy Gates finished with 11 kills, 12 digs and six aces. Anna Cozzolino and Alexa Beal added seven kills each.

Cozzolino led the team in blocks with six and also had seven digs, while Kylee Marley finished with five kills, 12 digs and two aces, and Olivia Marsh had 23 assists and a team-high nine aces.

Westerly next travels to Johnston on Friday for a 6:30 p.m. match.
