WESTERLY — Westerly High lost to Cranston West, 4-3, in the Division I girls tennis opener for both teams Thursday at Rotary Park.

Westerly's top singles player, Gianna Ferraro, prevailed in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.

Kaleigh Pasell won a very close match at No. 4 singles winning 4-6, 7-6 (4) and 7-6 (7).

Merissa Letizio and Hannah Nicholson won 6-4, 5-7, 10-8 at third doubles.

"It was a difficult loss, but Giana had a good win at No. 1," Westerly coach Terence McAndrew said. "Kaleigh, Merissa and Hannah earned their first careers victories the hard way."

Westerly next faces Bay View at Hendricken on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
