JOHNSTON — Johnston limited Westerly High to just one goal in the first half and handed the Bulldogs their first Division II girls lacrosse loss of the season, 9-6, Tuesday.
Westerly (8-1, 8-1 Division II) trailed 7-1 at the half.
"We didn't show up in the first half. Johnston has a great defense and our passes were not where they need to be to beat them," Westerly coach Meg Paisley said. "The last couple of games our passing has not been on. And we've been telling them, 'If you play like this against a decent team, you are going to lose.'
"I don't like to lose, but hopefully this will be a motivating factor in practice and a good wake-up call for them."
Johnston won 11 of the 17 draws and limited Westerly to just 15 shots.
Carly Chretien scored twice for Westerly. Grace Armstrong, Kata Cummings, Lauren Dobson and Diana Turano each scored a goal. Ashley Amato had two assists.
Johnston moved to 7-3, 7-3.
Westerly next hosts Cranston West on Saturday at 5 p.m.
