STONINGTON — Kate Johnson scored five goals and Stonington High beat Waterford, 17-11, in an ECC Division II girls lacrosse game Thursday.

Hannah Lamb and Emma Sabbadini each added four goals for the Bears (6-1, 2-0 ECC D-II).

Stonington freshman Dillon Griscom face-guarded Waterford's Olivia Gianakos as the Bears tried to slow down the Lancers' top scoring threat.

"[Gianakos] scores about half their goals, so we decided to face guard her," Stonington coach Jeff Medeiros said. "Dillon is a good defender. It worked out. She was excellent. She did exactly what we asked her to do."

Gianakos scored four goals, but three of them came on penalty shots.

Kathryn Logel contributed three goals and two assists and Abby Remmert had the other Stonington goal.

Megan Detwiler and Johnson had two assists each, and Lamb and Sabbadini also had assists.

Stonington led 13-7 at halftime. Goalie Isabella McCarthy finished with six saves.

Waterford dropped to 3-4, 1-1.

Stonington next hosts Old Saybrook on Monday at 11 a.m.
