WESTERLY — Westerly High freshman Kaya West opened her career by taking first place in a Southern Division girls cross country meet with Narragansett and Prout on Tuesday at the Bradford Preserve.

West, one of the top middle school runners in the state last season, covered the 3.1-mile course in 20:53. Jenna Burke was second in 21:05.

Westerly defeated Narragansett, 15-44 and Prout, 24-31.

Other scorers for Westerly were Maddie Lorello (fifth, 22:17), Anna Nyberg (sixth, 22:19) and Mia Campbell (10th, 24:10).

Westerly next competes on Tuesday hosting Exeter-West Greenwich, South Kingstown and West Warwick at 4 p.m.
