NORTH STONINGTON — Wheeler High opened a 14-point lead in the first quarter and went on to a 41-34 victory over Montville in an ECC out-of-division girls basketball game Friday, the Lions' regular-season finale.

Sam Caster and Addie Hauptmann each scored nine points for the Lions (12-8). Molly Butremovic and Annie Dussault added eight apiece.

Wheeler led 30-16 at halftime before Montville (8-10) made it a seven-point game, 33-25, after three quarters. But the Indians never could get closer than seven the rest of the way.

"In the final period the girls just played really intelligent basketball," Lions coach Dan McClure said. "They made every right decision down the stretch. They played with poise and stymied any run Montville could make."

Hauptmann and Pion each grabbed five rebounds for Wheeler.

Maya Hillman led Montville with 16 points.

"The keys were winning the boards against Hillman and being patient on both sides of the ball," McClure added.

Wheeler next awaits pairings for the ECC Division II Tournament.
