STONINGTON — Weaver, seeded 28th in the Class M girls basketball tournament, opened the fourth quarter of a tie game with a 10-0 run and never looked back, defeating No. 3 Stonington High, 62-52, in a first-round game Tuesday night.
The closest Stonington would get in the final period was seven points, 56-49, with 2:37 remaining.
Senior forward Aliza Bell led the Bears with 16 points, 10 rebounds and four steals.
Stonington got off to a good start against the Lady Beavers (11-10), leading 17-6 with 1:20 left in the first quarter.
But Weaver, trailing 19-11 after one period, eventually tied the game at 29 by halftime.
The Bears took the lead in the opening minutes of the third quarter, and made it 37-31 midway through the period. But Weaver would again claw its way back and tie the game at 43 heading into the fourth period and setting the stage for its key run.
Rhonasha Stevenson led the Lady Beavers with 19 points.
Miranda Arruda had 13 points, five rebounds and three steals for Stonington. Zoe Ribeiro hit three 3-pointers and also scored 13, and Kate Johnson had four points, four assists and four steals.
The Bears ended their season with a 17-6 record, losing three of their last four games.
