NEW BRITAIN — Stonington High's Rhys Hammond finished third in the 800 at the State Open boys outdoor track meet Monday at Willow Brook Park.

Hammond finished with a time of 1:54.69, just .07 seconds from first-place finisher Pierre Sylvain of Xavier (1:54.62). Tolland's Stephen Sutton was second (1:54.67) in the closely contested race.

Joey Hinckley placed sixth in the pole vault, clearing a season-best 13-6. Coginchaug's Hayden Rovelli was first at 14-6.

Both Hammond and Hinckley qualified for the New England championships Saturday at Thornton Academy in Saco, Maine, at 10 a.m.

Stonington finished tied for 25th with nine points. Bloomfield was first with 108.
