WESTERLY — J.D. Dauphinais won the clinching match in a third-set tiebreaker and Westerly High got past Burrillville, 4-1, in the Division III boys tennis tournament Tuesday at Rotary Park.
The match was much closer than the score indicated. Westerly had three wins, but was trailing in two doubles matches when Dauphinais earned his victory at third singles.
Dauphinais lost the first set, 3-6, won the second, 6-2, and prevailed in the third, 7-6 (3).
Dauphinais took a 5-2 lead in the final set, but lost four of the next five games to leave things tied 6-6.
"He made me calm at the 6-5 changeover when all of a sudden he started laughing," Westerly coach Terence McAndrew said. "He did a good job of compartmentalizing his emotions. He had nerves of steel."
Dauphinais is 13-1 with his only loss coming in the state qualifying tournament.
No. 1 Blake Busch won his match 6-2, 6-3, and No. 2 Ryan Teixeira won 6-4, 6-2. No. 4 Brandon Larossa won his first set 6-4 and was leading 5-3 when his opponent retired due to injury.
No. 7 Burrillville finished the season 6-7.
No. 2 Westerly moves to the semifinals on Thursday and faces Tolman-Shea at Barrington at 5 p.m.
