OLD SAYBROOK — Old Saybrook scored three goals in the first half and shut out Wheeler High, 5-0, in the second round of the Class S boys soccer tournament Wednesday.
"We started off well," Wheeler coach Joe Mendonca said. "They are very direct, very hard and very quick. We adjusted to that, but we were playing against a strong wind and couldn't get the ball over midfield."
Old Saybrook, the No. 5 seed, scored its second goal on penalty kick.
"The third goal, we started to press a little more and we got caught flat," Mendonca said. "In the second half, we had the wind, but couldn't get much going. They are a pretty strong team with some good athletes. They have 16 seniors, 11 juniors and a sophomore."
Old Saybrook outshot the Lions, 12-5, and had five corner kicks to the Lions' one.
"It was the last game for our senior class. I was pleased and happy for them. We accomplished what we wanted to accomplish," Mendonca said.
No. 12 Wheeler finished the season 10-7-2.
Old Saybrook (13-2-2), the defending Class S champion, next travels to No. 4 Lyman Memorial for a quarterfinal-round game on Friday at 2 p.m.
