NORTH STONINGTON — Wheeler High boys cross country coach Marc Tardiff knew he needed a leader for this year’s team.

The Lions had lost seven seniors to graduation so someone had to come forward. Junior Michael Carroll did just that.

“He really stepped up this year. It was his third year running with me,” Tardiff said. “He really became a leader. He got the boys running during the summer, he was first in all our races and our most reliable runner.”

Carroll earned first-team All-ECC Division IV for the Lions. Carroll was the first runner across the line in two meets this season. He also finished 44th at the ECC championships and 47th at the Class S state meet.

He was was also the team’s scholar-athlete recipient.

“This year he was one of the guys who I could talk to about the workouts that we needed to do. I valued his opinion,” Tardiff said.

Junior Cam Reyes earned Division IV honorable-mention recognition. Reyes was the No. 2 runner on the team, finishing second in two meets this season behind Carroll. Reyes was 87th at the ECC meet.

Sophomore Ben Dobley was the team’s ECC sportsmanship recipient.

Wheeler finished 4-4 overall and 2-4 in dual meets in the league.
