STONINGTON — Jacob Geary scored 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as Stonington High defeated Wheeler High, 78-36, in the ECC Division II boys basketball tournament Friday night.

The second-seeded Bears will face Griswold at Waterford High in the semifinals at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The loss ended the season for the 10th-seeded Lions.

Stonington led 23-8 at the end of the first quarter and 41-18 at the half.

"Wheeler battled, but we came out of the gate quickly," Stonington coach John Luzzi said. "We were able to get a lot of open looks against their zone and get out in transition."

Wheeler was coming off an upset win against Putnam in the opening round on Thursday. It was the first ECC tournament win for the Lions.

Zach Scott made three 3-pointers and scored 14 points for Stonington (16-5). R.J. Parrilla and Cooper Wall finished with 12 each.
