STONINGTON — State-ranked Waterford used a zone press to increase the tempo and force turnovers, and went on to defeat Stonington High, 76-53, in an ECC out-of-division boys basketball game Tuesday night.
Division II Waterford (15-1, ranked sixth in the GameTimeCT state poll) led 19-8 after one quarter and 45-17 at halftime.
"Our game plan was to try to slow the game down, to limit their offensive possessions and limit their transition because they're a good offensive team," Stonington coach John Luzzi said. "But we got sloppy with the ball. They set up a zone press and they did an effective job of turning us over, and before you blinked it was 28-8.
"It was just a tough night all around. They're No. 6 in the state for a reason."
J.J. Brennan led the Lancers (15-1) with four 3-pointers and 23 points.
Marquis Jackson had 16 points (three 3-pointers) and five rebounds for the Division III Bears (12-4). Zach Scott added 13 points, five rebounds and three steals, and R.J. Parrilla had nine points and three assists.
Stonington next plays at Division III Windham on Friday at 7 p.m.
