GROTON — Scott Pion and Bowen Baker each finished with double-doubles to lead the Wheeler High boys basketball team to a 69-35 victory over Norwich Tech on Friday in the consolation game of the Grasso Tech Holiday Tournament.
Pion had 25 points and 10 rebounds; Baker, 17 and 10. Both are seniors.
"They had a tough time guarding Pion and Baker," Lions coach Neal Cobleigh said. "They drove at will. Lukas Jones also opened things up for us from three."
Jones was 5 for 8 from beyond the arc to account for all 15 of his points. Pion added five assists and four steals, and Baker, who was named to the all-tournament team, had four assists and three steals.
Wheeler (2-2) led 37-13 at halftime.
"The big story was our defense," Cobleigh added. "We trapped very well and stopped penetration. We played hard and we played smart."
Norwich Tech fell to 0-4.
The Lions don't play again until Jan. 4, when they host Plainfield at 7 p.m.
