GROTON — Montville jumped to a 14-point lead in the first quarter and went on to defeat the Wheeler High boys basketball team, 57-32, on Thursday in the Grasso Tech Holiday Tournament.

Montville led 22-8 after one period, and Wheeler never recovered in the ECC Division IV game.

Bernard Hawkins led the Indians (3-0, 2-0 Division IV) with 16 points.

"Their press killed us in the first quarter," Lions coach Neal Cobleigh said. "We actually played pretty well the last three quarters. But the first quarter put us way behind and it's tough for us to catch up."

Bowen Baker paced Wheeler (1-2, 0-1) with 14 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and two steals. He was the only Lion to score in double figures.

Cobleigh said senior forward Ian Spracklin was unavailable for the game.

Wheeler continues play in the tournament on Friday, taking on Norwich Tech in the consolation game at 4 p.m. at the Grasso gym.
