STONINGTON — Stonington High first baseman Jake Verbridge demonstrated constant improvement over the course of the baseball season, and he was rewarded for his efforts.
Verbridge, who hit a team-leading .343 for the season, was a first-team All-ECC Division III selection.
"He set the tone on the team for working hard," Stonington coach Bob Cahoone said. "He worked hard every day in practice, trying to get better and keeping everyone up.
"At the plate, he went with the pitch, driving the ball to right field. Even his outs were hit hard."
Verbridge led the Bears in hits (23), doubles (5) and RBIs (16).
He also made steady improvement at first base.
"He got a lot better and was able to pick up the ball very well at first base," Cahoone said.
Peter Fernholz received the ECC sportsmanship award for the team, and Sam Casadei was the scholar-athlete.
The Bears, who did not have a senior on the team, finished 8-14. They lost to ninth-seeded Haddam-Killingworth in the opening round of the Class M tournament.
