WESTERLY — Matt Brissette pitched a two-hitter as Westerly High earned its first postseason berth since 2014 defeating Scituate, 1-0, in a Division II baseball game Tuesday at Cimalore Field.
Westerly is 11-4, 9-4 Division II.
Brissette did not strike out a batter, but walked just one. He only three 79 pitches in the complete-game performance.
Brissette is 4-3 with a 0.88 ERA.
"He mixes up his pitches. He has a changeup, a curveball and a fastball. He throws so much offspeed stuff that when he does throw his fastball it seems to come much quicker," Westerly coach Ron Sposato said. "He hits his spots and he keeps batters off balance."
Westerly's scored the game's only run in the first inning. Zack Beckler walked and scored on a hit and run when Luke Gentile doubled to the gap in right center field.
Gentile had both of Westerly's hits, a pair of doubles.
Westerly had runners on second and third in the second and loaded the bases in the third, but could not score either time.
Scituate dropped to 7-7 overall and in the league.
Westerly next travels to Scituate on Wednesday at 4:15 p.m.
