PAWTUCKET — Zack Beckler delivered a two-run single in the fifth inning and Westerly High got past St. Raphael, 3-2, in a Division II baseball game Wednesday.
"It was a good win for us. We haven't had a win against a quality team this late in the season in a while," Westerly coach Ron Sposato said. "It's good for the team's confidence."
Westerly (9-3, 8-4 Division II) trailed 2-0 before the fifth.
No. 7 hitter Spencer Bernat singled to open the inning. Luke Gentile followed with another single, and Phil Pedersen reached on a bunt to load the bases.
Mike Fiore (2 for 2) walked in a run, and Beckler followed with his two-run single.
St. Raphael (9-3, 9-3) loaded the bases in the sixth with two outs. But Bulldogs right fielder Spencer Bernat made a nice running catch in the gap to end the inning.
Pedersen pitched the first five innings and allowed five hits with three strikeouts to earn the win.
Beckler pitched the final two innings and earned a save. The nine wins are the most for a Westerly team since 2014.
Westerly next hosts Stonington on Saturday at 7 p.m.
