HIGGANUM, Conn. — Haddam-Killingworth's John Civiello pitched a no-hitter as the Cougars defeated Stonington High, 3-1, in the first round of the Class M state baseball tournament Wednesday.

It was the second time Stonington has been no-hit this season.

Stonington pitcher Drew Champagne allowed just three hits and one earned run to take the loss.

"He spotted the ball outside and left it there most of the game," Stonington coach Bob Cahoone said of his starter.

No. 24 Stonington (8-14) scored its run in the fifth when Champagne walked and scored on an error.

No. 8 Haddam-Killingworth (17-6) next travels to East Catholic on Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

Stonington could return its entire roster in 2020 — the team played without any seniors this season.
