KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Chariho High's Ben Dougherty placed sixth in the 172 pound class at the Christmas Classic wrestling tournament on Saturday at Osceola High.
Dougherty, who won the Rhode Island state title at 160 pounds last season, finished with a 4-3 record. He had one pin.
Chariho finished 20th among the 32 teams that competed with 63.5 points. Camden, Georgia won the tournament with 191 points. Lake Gibson, Florida was tied for second with Woodland High (Cartersville, Ga.) with 185 points.
Dominic Bonnano (154), Cam Anderson (184) and Mike Phelps (285) each won three matches for the Chargers.
Kyle Merritt (140) won two bouts. Merritt withdrew with an injury before his final bout. Coach Scott Merritt, his father, said Kyle was not seriously injured and withdrew as a precaution.
"It was a great experience as a whole for our team," coach Merritt said of the trip to Florida.
Chariho also wrestled teams from Alabama, South Carolina and Florida in a dual match on Thursday.
The Chargers next compete in the Chad Antoch Memorial Tournament on Saturday at Westerly High at 9 a.m.
