KISSIMEE, Fla. — Chariho High earned two wins during a wrestling tri-match at Osceola High on Thursday.

The Chargers defeated Hillcrest High of Simpsonville, S.C., 33-32, and Freedom High of Orlando, Fla., 39-30. The Chargers lost to Thompson High of Alabaster, Ala., 43-21.

Thompson is the defending Alabama state champion and has won six of the last seven state titles, Chariho coach Scott Merritt said.

Chariho's Kyle Merritt (138 pounds), Nate Marchione (195) and Mike Phelps (285) all finished 3-0 for the day. Merritt won all his bouts by pin.

Ben Dougherty (170), Cam Anderson (182), James Dougherty (160) and Devin Shaw (220) each finished 2-1. Dominic Bonnano (152) and Wade Husing (106) won one bout each.

Hillcrest and Thompson have enrollments nearly double Chariho's. Freedom's enrollment is more than triple Chariho's.

The Chargers will wrestle in a 40-team tournament Friday in Flordia that has nine nationally ranked wrestlers, coach Merritt said.
