CRANSTON — Dominic Bonanno earned a win with a close decision as the Chariho High wrestling team defeated winless Cranston East, 51-30, in a Division I-A bout Thursday night.
Bonanno defeated Nick Rutherford, 1-0, in the bout at 152 pounds to move to 27-7 this season. Bonanno had an escape in the second period for the only point of the match.
"Rutherford is ranked sixth in the state," Chariho coach Scott Merritt said. "He was able to ride him out in the third period. Dominic was sick earlier in the season, but continues to get healthy."
Merritt is referring to the rankings on the Proboards wrestling forum for Rhode Island. Bonanno has been ranked No. 1 in the weight class a number of times in the forum.
James Dougherty earned a pin at 160 pounds (2:49). Devin Shaw prevailed at 220 with a pin (2:55). Mike Phelps pinned his opponent at 285 (1:42).
Wade Husing (106), Kyle Merritt (138), Ben Dougherty (170), Cam Anderson (182) and Nate Marchione (195) won by forfeit.
Cranston East is 0-10 overall and in the league.
Chariho (18-3, 9-2) travels to North Kingstown on Thursday at 6 p.m.
