NORTH PROVIDENCE — Kate Powers homered and carried a perfect game into the seventh inning as Chariho High shut out North Providence, 9-0, in a Division I softball game Wednesday.
Powers retired the first 19 batters in order before allowing a one-out single in the seventh. She only faced 22 batters, one over the minimum, and struck out 11. Powers has 106 strikeouts in 74 innings with a 1.14 ERA this season.
Powers (3 for 4) hit a two-run homer to left field that looked like it "landed on Mars," according to coach Dave Petrocelli.
Shelby Roode also hit a two-run homer to left field and finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Chloe Joslin and Caitlin O'Leary both finished 3 for 4 as Chariho pounded out 16 hits. O'Leary drove in two runs, and Joslin one. Ava Rao also had two hits.
The Chargers are hitting .372 as a team.
North Providence dropped to 9-7, 8-7 Division I. Chariho (14-1, 13-1), which has won 14 straight, hosts East Providence on Thursday at 4:15 p.m.
