WOOD RIVER JCT. — Kate Powers struck out 11 and was one batter away from a perfect game as the Chariho High softball team beat Cumberland, 2-0, in a Division I game Tuesday.
The Clippers' only hit was a bloop single to short right field in the fifth inning with two outs. Powers did not walk a batter and the Chargers did not commit an error. She faced 22 batters, one over the minimum.
Powers had struggled earlier in the season with her control, but seems to be back on track now.
"She's been working hard on getting her control back," Chariho coach Dave Petrocelli said. "It was an excellent outing. We expect that out of her. We know what she is capable of."
Chariho took a 1-0 lead in the second when Chloe Joslin (3 for 3) scored on a Cumberland error.
The Chargers, who finished with six hits, added another run in the sixth on a two-out RBI single by Shelby Roode that scored Joslin.
Cumberland fell to 2-3, 2-3 Division I.
Chariho (4-1, 4-1) next travels to Moses Brown Thursday for a 4:15 p.m. game.
