WOOD RIVER JUNCTION — Caitlin O'Leary hit a grand slam in the fourth inning and the Chariho High softball team downed Prout, 8-2, to earn its 12th straight win in a Division I game Friday.
O'Leary's blast cleared the fence in right-center field. Annaliese Kenney (2 for 3, two runs scored) and Ava Rao opened the inning with singles. One out later, Jackie Altieri walked and O'Leary followed with her third homer of the season to break a 1-1 tie.
O'Leary leads the Chargers with a .580 batting average. She also leads the team in hits (29), RBIs (17), doubles (4) and runs scored (21).
Shelby Roode doubled twice and drove in a run, and Haylie Wellman finished 2 for 4. Wellman (4-0) pitched the first six innings to earn the victory. She struck out five.
Prout is 2-8, 2-8 Division I. Chariho (12-1, 11-1) next hosts Cranston West on Saturday at 3 p.m.
